Give Chiang Rai province the time it deserves on a two day one night tour from Chiang Mai. The first day will start when we collect you from your Chiang Mai hotel and take the road north towards Chiang Dao. On the route you can take the option to visit the tigers at Tiger Kingdom before proceeding on to Chiang Dao Cave. The cave here is home to a small Buddha shrine and we will also take a local cave guide on a lamp lit tour of the deep caves! following the cave the drive will proceed north to the small town of Thaton on the Kok River. Thaton is home to a multi-tier temple which affords some great views over the town and the Kok river valley towards Chiang Rai. Lunch will be taken by the river and then we will proceed towards Doi Mae Salong, we will stop on route and you can take the option to vist the Paduang hill tribe (commonly referred to as the Karen long Neck) and then onto Baan Lorcha Akha village a community based tourism project where the locals will be happy to show you around their village and explain their culture to you! We will proceed high up into the hills to the hill top town of Doi Mae Salong. This unique town is populated with a mixture of mostly ethnic Chinese and ethnic groups of different hill tribes. The ethnic Chinese arrived here after their defeat of their KMT army and needed to escape China in 1950. The Thai government let them stay and they are still here to this day. The architecture of the town is heavily influenced from the Chinese province that many of these Chinese arrived from (Yunan). Our last stop of the day will be Wat Santikhiri Temple which is situated on one of the highest spots in the area and allows great views over the town of Doi Mae Salong below. If you want to visit this temple please be ready for a walk up over 700 steps!! The days tour will finish when we drop you at your Mae Salong hotel.
The day will start when we pick you up from your Doi Mae Salong hotel. The hills around Doi Mae Salong use to be at the centre of a large opium poppy growing area, but times have changed and opium has been replaced with the growing of other crops including tea. Our first stop of the day will be at a large tea plantation which is typical of many now in the area. Following the tea plantation we will continue the drive onto Doi Tung and the Mae Fah Luang Garden, these lovely and immaculately landscaped gardens are a flower lovers dream, and as this garden is situated in the mountains the air is usually a lot cooler than on the low land plains below. Our next stop of the day will be at the border town of Mae Sai where you can take some time to visit the bust border market here as well as see the hectic coming and goings of Thai and burmese crossing the border post into Myanmar here. After Mae Sai it will be time for lunch before proceeding to the Golden Triangle area, the meeting point of three countries (Thailand, Laos and Myanmar) from the riverbank here you can take in the view of all three countries as well as the mighty Mekong River which separates them. We will then take a long tail boat on the Mekong River making a quick stop on the Laos side at the little tourist market at Don Xao before proceeding down river to Chiang Saen where we will board the waiting minibus. We will then make the drive to visit the Baan Dam museum (Black House Museum) Baan Dam is a small collection of buildings housing an eclectic collection of local artefacts and art by the artist Thawan Duchanee. Our next stop will be at the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) Despite damage from a recent earthquake still clearly visible on this temple it is still a stunning and unique spectacle and unlike any other temple you will see in Thailand. Following Wat Rong Khun it will be time to return to Chiang Mai where we will make a stop at Mae Kha Jan Hot Springs. The tour will finish when we transfer yo to your Chiang Mai hotel.
